BEGINNINGS
The end of the Civil War (1861-1865) saw the masses of ex-slaves in the United States become eligible for equal rights under the Constitution of the United States of America. Right from the beginning…education became a necessity.
“The first schools were mostly one room shacks…”
The determined ex-slaves were buoyed by their gritty will, the churches, philanthropists and the federal government agencies. The benefited from their skills and discipline as they adapted to the etiquette of the society that had denied them the rights of first class citizenship.
