Menchville High School Students Win National Award

Youth Sports Bureau: Building Citizens One by One

(Newport News, VA)   Fare Share, a volunteer community service group from Menchville High School, recently earned a $10,000 Grand Prize Award from Lead4Change, a national organization that provides free leadership training for students while engaging them in community service. This is their second in the past five years.
The students award the grant to nonprofit of their choice. In September, students presented the check to THRIVE Peninsula, a nonprofit that provides emergency food and financial aid to individuals and families.
During the 2018-2019 school year, the 22 students in the program spent over 1,200 hours hosting food collections, leading clean-ups at the Menchville school garden and outdoor learning center, collecting items for the school’s backpack program, and conducting anti-bullying campaigns.
Club members also raised

over $3,000 and collected more than 3,100 pounds of food during the school year and, through the school’s food pantry and backpack program, students packed or served nearly 4,000 meals.
The  students partner with the Newport News Department of Human Services and THRIVE Peninsula to educate and inform the public of food scarcity and socio-economic issues in the city.

Another collaboration between The Arts Partnership and the Youth Sports Bureau exemplifies how community groups working together to create positive change by encouraging talented youth to create a sense of pride in the Southside community as well as create a feeling of

ownership. The historical part of the city has been a source of pride with their involvement that target youth of all ages and economic levels.
The Youth Sports Bureau’s mission is to provide a safe environment for youth to learn skills, which can be used beyond the program to become productive citizens. They have developed alliances with the several workforce groups to provide training for entry level jobs.  READ MORE
